Jordan’s Post: Introducing Jordan!

Hello!

My name is Jordan and I am an environmental geography major at UNH. I decided to intern with Seacoast Eat Local due to my interest in the environmental issues surrounding our current food system. Growing up, I loved sitting on our patio in the summer and eating cucumbers from our garden with vinegar, salt, and pepper, or better yet, sitting in our garden eating snap peas when I was supposed to be weeding. However, it wasn’t until later on that I realized how fortunate I was to have access to local food and fresh fruit and vegetables when one sixth of Americans don’t have enough food to eat (McMillan). And the more I continued to research the topic, the more I realized that food security is one of the biggest issues, not only America, but the global community is facing. Yet, so little of it is broadcasted.

With SEL, I hope to help educate the public on where their food comes from and why knowing where it comes from is important. Personally, I would love to see more people realizing where their meat is coming from. I have met too many people who refuse to eat meat off the bone because they don’t want to be reminded that it comes from an animal. With this blog, I hope that I can delve into some of the more untouched issues surrounding our food system but also manage to bring some humor into my posts as well. On that note, please enjoy this video of Linsey Pollak, a musician from Australia, demonstrating one of the many ways to incorporate local food into your life.
