New Heights Spring Gardening Program

New Heights spring gardening seriesNew Heights is offering a series of spring workshops for kids grades 6 through 12.

The programs take place at New Height’s Community Campus location in Portsmouth, with lots of fun field trips from there! Portsmouth Middle School kids can catch a bus right from school.

Greenhouse Growing:
5 weeks, 3 to 5pm
Thursday March 20, Friday March 28 & April 4. Tuesday April 8 & April 15

Try out your green thumb at growing micro greens, lettuce, baby sunflowers, and other veggies in our glass greenhouse to cook with and to donate to the Portsmouth Middle School Cafeteria. You will learn how to raise food from seed and we’ll visit local greenhouses!

New Heights gardening

Sow, Grow, Cook & Compost
6 weeks, 3 to 5pm
Wednesdays April 9, 16, 23 & May 7, 14, 21

This  workshop  will  be  a  survey  of  community  gardens  and  responsible   farming,  the  SLO  food  movement  and   how  local  foodies  are  eating,  as  well   as  a  behind-­‐the-­‐scenes  look  at  area   composting  where  we  will  bring  the cycle  of  sustenance  around  to  soil  again.

Guerilla Gardening
3 weeks, 3 to 5pm
Tuesday May 6, Friday May 23 & May 30

Plant  sunflowers  with  us  in  Portsmouth  as  a  symbol  of  change  and  urban  beautification! Make “seed  bombs”  and  recycled  planters   to  decorate  the  community  and  get  crafty  with  signage  and  art  projects   to  pair  with  these  public  plantings.

Environmental Sculpture
8 weeks, 3 to 5pm
Mondays April 7, 14, 21, & May 5, 12, 19 & June 2, 9

We’ll  travel  the  Seacoast,  building   beautiful  and  meaningful  sculptures   out  of  what  we  find  in  various   locations,  from  beaches  to   woodlands. When  we  finish  a   sculpture,  we  will  document  and   then  let  them  dissolve  back  into   their  natural  state.
